Towering Visions Ltd. has been
facing financial problems in meeting financial objectives. The Financial
Director has told the Managing Director that it is unlikely that the company
will meet its profit targets this year, but a cut in the wages of employees of
1% would do the trick.
The labor union, General Employees
Association, has been recognized as a ‘model union’ by some companies. It has
pioneered no-strike deals, flexible working and is favorably disposed to the
introduction of advanced work practices, new technology and so forth. So, the
Managing Director and Finance Director negotiated with the General Employees Association
about the cut in wages. ‘After all, it’s only 1% – the union has been
cooperative; it has always put the good of the company first’. This idea is
presented to the union leader, whose jaw drops in astonishment. This is not the
expected response.
