How to Add MathType Tab in Microsoft Office 2016 in 6 simple steps

MathType Tab has disappeared from Microsoft Word 2016, 64-bit

The information in this document applies to:

  • MathType 6.9b and later
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 2016, 32,64-bit only!

Add MathType Tab in Microsoft Word 2007,2010,2013 or 2016

Please note: This article assumes you have confirmed you are using 64-bit Office. If you haven't verified this, don't just guess and don't assume. In fact, most computers running 64-bit Windows are not using 64-bit Office. They are using 32-bit Office. The steps below will not work for 32-bit Office.
Ø Launch Microsoft Word.
Ø From the File tab choose Options.

Ø In the resulting window, from the left-side navigation menu choose Add-ins. (Step 1)
Ø Using the drop-down menu located at the bottom of the window, (Step 2) choose Word Add-ins and click the button labeled, "Go". (Step 3)
Ø In the resulting window, under Global Templates and add-ins, the following items should be present and have a checkmark next to each:
o   MathType Commands 6 for Word 2016.dotm
o   WordCmds.dot

Ø If the items from above step are present and checked, click OK. If they're present but not checked, click to place a checkmark in the box, then click OK. The tab should be present.

Add-ins dialog for Word 2016

Ø If the items from step 5 are not present, that's OK. Please try this:
a.    Click the Add button. This will open a window titled Add Template.
b.    In the window, navigate to one of these 2 paths (if the first one isn't on your computer, go to the second one):

C:\Program\Files\MathType\OfficeSupport\64
 or
 C:\Program Files (x86)\MathType\Office Support\64
c.    You will see the following items in the folder (among others): MathType Commands 6 for Word 2016.dotm
     WordCmds.dot
If there's not a ...Word 2016.dotm file in the folder, verify once again you're using the correct version of MathType. (Office 2016 is only supported by MathType 6.9b (not 6.9 and not 6.9a) and later.
d.    Select one of them at a time, and click Open. This will bring it into the Add-Ins box. You will then need to click Add one more time to bring in the other add-in (either MathType Commands 6 for Word 2016.dotm or WordCmds.dot).
e.    Once you have both of them listed under Templates and Add-ins, the boxes on the left side should have a checkmark inside, but if they don't, click to place a checkmark there. Click OK.
f.      This will restore the MathType Tab to the Word Ribbon. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to load them in. Let us know if this helps.

Note: If you have meticulously worked through this process and the MathType tab is still not on the ribbon in Word, please write and let us know you've gone through the steps here, and you still don't have a MathType tab. Please let us know what versions of Windows, Word, and MathType you're using, as well as your MathType product key.
